Paul Gerlach | Music Director

Paul Gerlach became the Allegheny Brass Band's Music Director in 1999, having been a member of the cornet section in 1990, Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he graduated from North Hills High School in 1962. and from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University:) in 1967 with two B.F.A degrees, one in Music Education and another in Applied Music/Trumpet. He continued his education there, earning an M.F.A in Applied Music/Trumpet (1968) and another M.F.A. in Musicology (1972). His dissertation topic was " The Influence of Politics on Russian/Soviet Music". He returned to CMU for post-graduate work in 1983-84 and 1991-92, studying trumpet, musicology, piano, and computer science, His teachers were Anthony L. Pasquarelli (trumpet), Dr. Frederick Dorian (musicology), and Dr. Richard Strange (conducting).

Mr. Gerlach was Director of Bands at Bellevue Jr.-Sr. High School from 1968-1975 and Northgate High School from 1975-83. Through 1998 he also taught instrumental music, junior high band and general music for the Northgate system. Since 1982 he has been Director of the Kiltie Band at CMU and is currently Artist/Lecturer for the Department of Music, teaching methods courses in brass, woodwinds, percussion, and fundamentals of marching band. From 1999-2005 he was Instructor of Trumpet and Director of the Brass Ensemble at Westminster College

He has taught studio trumpet since 1965, continues to play professionally and devotes considerable time to conducting. In addition to his work with ABB, his conducting experiences include associate, guest, rehearsal and substitute assignments with the Pennsylvania Music Educators Honors Band, the CMU Wind Ensemble, the CMU Summer Session Trumpet Ensemble, CMU Youth Brass Band, River City Youth Brass Band, Lock Haven University Symphonic Band and the Susquehanna University Honors Band. In 2007 Mr. Gerlach was guest conductor for thr Dioces of Pittsburgh All Star Band.

Mr. Gerlach has considerable experience as a festival adjudicator. He has been selected as both a floor and sight reading judge for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association and West Virginia Bandmasters Association festivals. He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, Pennsylvania Collegiate Bandmasters Association(past president), College Band Directors National Association, International Trumpet Guild, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Mu.
